5 Days Kenya Budget Camping Safari

Overview
This is a Kenya camping safari to Samburu/Great Rift Valley Lakes. A safari to the North via the high shoulder of Mt. Kenya to the Game Reserve of Samburu, followed by the world famous Bird sanctuaries of the Great Rift Valley Lakes of Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru.

Attractions:
Samburu Game Reserve

This hot and arid wilderness is home to plenty of animals including the big five i.e lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Samburu National Reserve is also home to the endangered Grevy's Zebra and also gerenuks - all rare to find elsewhere. The park is also a haven for birth watchers as it boasts close to 400 bird species. It is connected, by way of a bridge, to the Buffalo Springs National Park.

Lake Baringo

Lake Baringo in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley is a dramatically situated freshwater lake approximately 22 km long by 11 kms wide. Evidence of its violent volcanic origins is all around, and especially in the extraordinary stepped basalt cliffs to the West of the lake.

It lies at an altitude of 1100 meters and is surrounded by mountains rising to almost 3000 meters above the ambient ground level in places. Beyond the northern end of the Lake rises the dormant volcano, Karosi, 1449 meters high. The Lake is home to hippos and crocodiles as well as an abundance of colourful birds and small reptiles. Giraffe and other grazers are also present to the north of the lake.

Lake Nakuru National Park

The park lies in Central Kenya, 140km north-west of Nairobi, in Nakuru district of the Rift Valley Province. The ecosystem comprises of the lake, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with Flamingos (Greater and Lesser) and other water birds being the major attractions of the area.

The ecosystem provides for about 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 species.

You may either stop on the way at Nanyuki for lunch or have your lunch at your destination in the Samburu Game Reserve.

Either way your are expected to have arrived in Samburu by the late afternoon and in the evening embark on a game drive around the park and at sunset returning to you camp site for dinner and to rest for the night.

You will have an early breakfast and then leave Samburu in the early morning, and make a scenic drive towards Lake Baringo across the Lerochi Plateau while descending to the floor of the Great Rift Valley, arriving at Lake Baringo in the evening.

Day 4: Lake Baringo – Lake Nakuru National Park

Early in the morning we head south via Lake Bogoria which is shallow soda lake with a beautiful scenery and also home to a sizeable number of flamingoes and other species of birds. The highlight, however, is the boiling hot springs and geysers – hot enough to boil an egg – which also contributes to the beauty of the Lake. Don’t Fall!

After lunch, we proceed to Lake Nakuru in the South – another shallow soda lake which has been described as “an ornithological paradise and one of the world’s most magnificent sights. Here one has an opportunity to see up to two million flamingos besides tens of thousands of other birds.
