Machakos County

Machakos is South Eastern Kenya and is blessed with a variety of tourism attractions ranging from the rich cultural heritage diversity to historical missionary destinations to breathtaking landscapes and sceneries.

Machakos County, nicknamed ‘Macha,’ was the first capital city of Kenya and now, it is an administrative county located in the former Eastern Province of Kenya. constitutes 8 constituencies including Machakos Town, Mavoko, Masinga, Yatta, Kangundo, Kathiani, Matungulu, and Mwala.  The county covers an area of 6,281 .4km2 most of which is semi-arid.

Some of the strengths in the county include closeness to Nairobi the capital city of the country, availability of massive land, strong Gender Supporting NGOs, well endowed with natural capital including livestock, minerals, wild game, tourists attraction sites, rangeland and space, and resilient local community with developed mechanism of survival

The beautiful hilly scenery is perfect for tourist related activities such as camping, hiking safaris, ecotourism and cultural tourism, dance and music festivals among many more.  The Makongo Valley, right behind the town, also offers a spectacular drive through undulating hills covered by forests and terraces that remind you of Italy.

The county is in addition the origin of the famous Akamba woodcarving and the basketry skills. The beautiful handcrafts and well decorated artifacts found in posh art galleries and gift shops both locally and abroad are products from this area.
