The land of exotic spices, exotic peoples, exotic culture, exotic beaches, and exotic history…this and more are in store for you on this island adventure.
Zanzibar is the place where Africa meets Arabia, Zanzibar is truly the island of dreams, romance and mystery. Early visitors to Zanzibar included Sumerians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Arabs and the British, each leaving behind a legacy of their stay.
Thus Zanzibar, the “jewel on the Indian Ocean” still is a favorite destination for today’s travelers, just as it was for early seafarers and explorers.
The Spice island of Zanzibar lies off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. It is famous for its slave trade and was the last place to abolish the slave trade. It was the commercial center of East Africa in the 1800s.
Today it combines ancient Islamic ruins, noble Arabic houses with miles of white sandy palm fringed beaches and coves. The ocean offers warm clear blue waters, idyllic islands, and excellent reefs for snorkeling and diving, and especially at the Pemba channel. Pemba channel is reknown for fantastic deep-sea fishing, water sports and of course delicious fresh fish. And if you thought that wasn’t enough, visiting the Spice plantations (cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom and others) or haggling for carvings in the Central Market is great fun too.
ZANZIBAR is a fantastic add on to any safari circuit in East Africa and a 03 to 04 night stay to soak up all that the area has to offer. After your wildlife Safari, fly to Zanzibar from Nairobi or Kilimanjaro.
THE STONE TOWN
The original Swahili town area of Zanzibar is well preserved with narrow streets and small shops stocking superb carvings and the locally grown spices. There are fascinating historic buildings with beautiful hand carved doors and a guided walking tour through the area is recommended.
